Understand the transmission, symptoms and prevention of Rhinoviruses

Rhinoviruses are one of the groups of viruses responsible for causing the common cold, a highly prevalent upper respiratory illness. Understanding rhinoviruses' causes, symptoms, and prevention methods can help minimise the risk of falling victim to these pesky viruses. This blog post will delve into the details to provide valuable insights on protecting yourself and maintaining optimal health.

Transmission of Rhinoviruses

  • Rhinoviruses are highly transmissible and primarily spread through:

    • Respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks
    • Through fomites (contaminated articles of clothing, beddings, linens and the likes)
    • Direct person-to-person contact

Symptoms of Infection

Rhinovirus infections typically manifest as the common cold. The following symptoms may indicate a rhinovirus infection:

  • Mild fatigue
  • Low-grade fever (less common)

The symptoms can vary in severity and overlap with other respiratory infections.

Methods of Prevention

Preventing rhinovirus infections involves first and foremost strict hygienic practices to reduce the risk of exposure and transmission. Here are some effective methods infection and its spread:

  • Hand hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating or touching your face. For hands that are not visibly dirty and soap and water are unavailable, use of hand sanitisers containing at least 60% alcohol is recommended.
  • Avoid close contact: Minimise contact with individuals who have cold symptoms. Maintain a safe distance, particularly in crowded areas.
  • Wear a mask: If you are symptomatic or is staying with someone with respiratory symptoms, it is best to wear a mask properly.
  • Practice respiratory hygiene: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissues properly.
  • Clean and disinfect: Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices.
  • Boost your immune system: Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, having enough hydration, exercising regularly, managing stress, and ensuring adequate sleep. A robust immune system can help fend off infections.
  • Vaccines: There are currently NO known vaccines vs Rhinoviruses.

Rhinoviruses are common culprits behind the common cold, causing discomfort and temporary illness. Incorporating good hygiene practices, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and following the recommended preventive measures, especially during cold seasons can ensure more pleasant living conditions.
