What Therapy Can I Get For PTSD Treatment?

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

There are different types of psychotherapy that can be used to treat PTSD. The most commonly used therapy technique is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), in particular exposure-based therapy. This involves helping the patients confront their feared memories and situations in a safe, therapeutic manner.

A controlled re-experience allows the traumatic event to be re-processed emotionally, so that it becomes less painful. The exposure may be done in real life, or via imaginal exposure, and will help to extinguish the conditioned fear. The therapist will also impart  various coping skills. A special form of therapy for PTSD is called Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which involves treating the fear and arousal associated with the traumatic event through guided eye movements with the therapist. This is proven to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms.¹³
