What is Lansoprazole?   

Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. 

Lansoprazole is a synthetic compound. It works by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (the “proton pump”) found at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. This action blocks the final step of acid production, thereby decreasing gastric acidity.

What is Lansoprazole used for? 

Lansoprazole is prescribed for: 

• Treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

• Treating and preventing peptic and stress-related  ulcers (severe burns, nervous system injury)
