Phenazopyridine is a medication primarily used to alleviate the pain, irritation, burning sensation, and discomfort associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is a pain reliever that affects the lower part of your urinary tract (bladder and urethra). 

Phenazopyridine's structure is based on an azo dye, which is responsible for its characteristic orange to red color in the urine. As a synthetic compound, it exerts its effect locally on the lining of the urinary tract after being excreted in the urine.
