What is Tamiflu?   

Tamiflu, known generically as oseltamivir, is an antiviral medication used primarily for the treatment and prevention of influenza A and B—commonly referred to as the flu. It works by inhibiting the neuraminidase enzyme, which is essential for the replication of the influenza virus within the body. The active ingredient is oseltamivir (as phosphate).

Usage

What is Tamiflu used for? 

Tamiflu is used to treat: 

  • Treat the flu (influenza A and B) in people 2 weeks of age and older who have had flu symptoms for no more than 48 hours. 
  • Prevent the flu in people 1 year of age and older. 

How do you use Tamiflu? 

Availability: 
Tamiflu is available in capsule form and as an oral suspension.

Dosage information: 

  • Adults and children 13 years and older: 75 mg twice daily for 5 days for treatment, and 75 mg once daily for up to 10 days or as per the duration of community flu outbreak for prevention. 
  • Children (1 year and older): Dosage based on body weight. Typically, 30-75 mg twice daily for 5 days for treatment. Best to speak to your doctor for an accurate dosage. 


Are the following suitable for getting the drug 

  • Children: Suitable for children 2 weeks and older for treatment and 1 year and older for prevention. 
  • Adults: Suitable for adults. 
  • Elderlies: Suitable for elderly patients; dose adjustments are not typically necessary. 

Is there anyone who shouldn’t get the drug?  

  • Children: Not recommended for infants under 2 weeks old. 
  • Adults: Those with severe renal impairment may need dose adjustment.
