Different types of medications can help in reducing PTSD symptoms.
Medications are typically given to those who prefer them over psychotherapy, or when psychotherapy is not readily available. Medications may also be preferred for those experiencing other co-existing conditions.
Antidepressants, especially Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), are efficacious in reducing PTSD symptoms. There is also some research supporting the use of antipsychotics as a single therapy or in the augmentation of antidepressants.
Prazosin is sometimes given to those experiencing nightmares and sleep disturbances. Sedatives, such as benzodiazepines, may be given for short term sleep promotion and reduction of anxiety. However, research has not found a clear benefit for these sedatives and they may even worsen symptoms with a potential for abuse and dependency. Speak to your practitioner for more information on finding the best treatment for PTSD.
