嘔吐通常不是嚴重疾病的象徵,往往只會維持1或2天。嘔吐是身體欲從胃中排走有害物質或腸道被刺激的反應,最常見原因之一是腸胃炎,可由細菌或病毒引起,通常會在幾天內得到改善。如反覆嘔吐超過一兩天、嘔吐物呈綠色或伴隨嚴重腹痛等,就應盡快求醫。
如非吃了不潔食物,嘔吐通常有機會是由腸胃炎、孕吐,甚至中樞神經相關疾病引起,因此切勿小歔嘔吐的嚴重程度,並作出相應的預防或治療方法。
